From Necessity to Creativity: How Making Became My Lifelong Joy
What a fantastic weekend I’ve just had. It’s honestly been so relaxing. I’ve been thinking about the things I’ve done over the years out of necessity rather than to be trendy.
When my daughter was one and the elder boys were 7 and 10 years old, we had recently moved house. They’d gone on holiday with their granny, and I’m not going to lie, I was bored. I repainted their bedroom walls and then had a Pokémon mural painted on their main wall.
I then sanded a massive old mahogany chest of drawers and repainted it in similar colours.
We’d moved from the East Coast, 10 minutes from the beach, to the West Coast, where I knew nobody.
Redecorating on a budget came naturally. I hand-sewed curtains, patched up walls, and it never occurred to me that I was being creative. Almost 30 years later being creative is my job and I love it more now than ever. Especially when I see something I’ve designed and made being loved by someone else.
Sending my creations to their forever homes just fills me with immense joy.
I still repurpose preloved pieces, and I absolutely love papier-mâché. Almost no outlay yet I can use my imagination to create some awesome , in my humble opinion, pieces.
Look out for some of my favourite pieces coming soon
Love and Light
